Apple issues QuickTime update for new MacBooks

Apple rolled out a QuickTime update Tuesday night that should alleviate some of the concern over the addition of some copy-protection technology to the new MacBooks.

Apple customers who bought one of the company’s new MacBooks or MacBook Pros introduced in October were annoyed to discover that the Mini DisplayPort on those systems uses a copy-protection technology called HDCP. That technology is supposed to prevent those owners from playing HD movies purchased from the iTunes store on external projectors that don’t also support HDCP technology. But several owners reported that standard-definition movies were also declared off-limits by their new systems.

HP unveils multi-touch consumer laptop/tablet

Hewlett-Packard on Wednesday launched its first multi-touch notebook for consumers.

The TouchSmart tx2 Notebook PC was modeled after HP’s desktop version of the same name (statement, Techmeme). The move ups the ante in the notebook race–assuming you think multi-touch is important.

The laptop also comes with a twist hinge that can make the TouchSmart tx2 a PC, display or tablet. It comes with a rechargeable digital ink pen to write.

First Core i7 desktops from Dell, Alienware and Gateway

Now that Intel has officially released its Core i7 processor, fresh desktops are arriving daily. Dell has released four systems with Core i7 processors, including one mainstream Studio XPS desktop and three gaming rigs. Gateway also announced two FX-series gaming systems. Notably absent is HP, which has yet to announce Core i7 updates to any of its desktops including the Pavilion Elite, HP Blackbird or Voodoo Omen.

Dell plots more cost cuts

Dell is planning on additional cost cutting measures including forced time off.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, CEO Michael Dell sent a memo outlining more cost cuts. The paper reports:

Dell said the company will consider a range of options to reduce its costs, including a hiring freeze, cutting contract employees, severance packages, the five-day furlough and, if necessary, more layoffs.
